Liquid Waste Removal
Wastewater, oils, sludge, grease, process liquids and chemicals can all require specialist removal when your business can no longer use them. Business Waste arranges liquid waste removal across the UK, including scheduled collections from drums, IBCs, suitable tanks, interceptors, and other bulk storage.
Tell us what liquid you have, how much there is, how it is currently stored and whether it contains hazardous substances. We’ll confirm the collection method, suitable containers where required, and the appropriate treatment, recovery or disposal route.

What liquid waste can we remove?
We can arrange collection and removal of many types of liquid waste, including:
- Process wastewater
- Contaminated wash water
- Waste cooking oil
- Motor and lubricating oils
- Grease trap waste
- Oil interceptor waste
- Sludge and slurry
- Liquid food and drink waste
- Brewery and distillery residues
- Cleaning liquids and detergents
- Solvents
- Chemical process liquids
- Septic tank and holding-tank waste
- Suitable flood water and contaminated runoff
The correct collection and treatment route depends on the liquid type and whether it is contaminated or hazardous. Different liquid wastes should not be mixed unless this has been confirmed as part of the service.
How liquid waste removal works
-
Tell us what liquid waste you have
Let us know the waste type, approximate volume, where it comes from and how it is currently stored. For chemical liquids, product or safety information can help identify the correct route.
-
Confirm the collection method
Smaller and regular liquid streams may use drums or IBCs. Bulk liquids already held in tanks, interceptors or other systems may require a specialist pump-out or tanker collection.
-
Store liquids securely until collection
Keep each waste stream in the agreed container or system and do not mix liquids unless the collection specification confirms they are compatible.
-
Your liquid waste is removed
Collection is arranged through registered waste carriers and the material is transferred to an authorised treatment, recovery or disposal facility. The relevant waste documentation is provided.

Types of liquid waste we collect:
Liquid waste covers a broad range of materials produced by businesses across every sector, including:
Wastewater and trade effluent: Process water, rinse water, and trade effluent from food production, manufacturing, catering, and commercial laundries. Trade effluent discharged to sewers requires consent from your water company under the Water Industry Act 1991.
Grease trap and interceptor waste: Fat, oil, and grease (FOG) collected from grease traps and oil interceptors in restaurants, food manufacturers, and petrol stations. Grease traps require regular emptying to prevent blockages and comply with drainage agreements.
Liquid food waste: Brewery waste, dairy effluent, juice and beverage production residues, and other organic liquid waste streams from the food and drink industry.
Waste oil and hydrocarbon liquids: Used cooking oil, motor oil, hydraulic fluid, and other hydrocarbon liquids. These may be eligible for recycling or energy recovery rather than disposal. We’ll let you know what collection route is suitable, including recycling or recovery where that’s available.
Chemical process liquids: Industrial process liquids, laboratory liquid waste, and chemical wash-down waters. Hazardous chemical liquids require specialist disposal with consignment note documentation.
Sewage and septic tank waste: Liquid waste from septic tanks, cesspools, and holding tanks at properties not connected to mains sewer.

Liquid waste recycling and recovery
Where possible, liquid waste is sent for recycling or recovery rather than straight disposal.
- Waste cooking oil and used vegetable oil can be refined into biodiesel or used for energy recovery.
- Certain industrial solvents and process liquids can be recovered through distillation and reused.
- Organic liquid food waste can be processed through anaerobic digestion (AD) to generate biogas and biofertiliser.
We’ll always identify the appropriate recovery route for your liquid waste stream. This can reduce disposal costs and gives you clearer records for internal reporting.
What containers are used for
liquid waste?
IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers)
IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers) suit larger volumes of compatible liquid waste and are available in common capacities of 600, 800 and 1,000 litres. They can be used for appropriate wastewater, oils, sludge, slurry and chemical liquids where the container specification is suitable for the material.
Not every liquid can use the same IBC. Tell us what the container will hold so we can confirm the correct storage and collection setup.

Liquid waste FAQs
-
What is liquid waste?
Liquid waste includes any liquid material produced as a by-product of business activities that requires disposal, treatment, or recycling. This includes wastewater, trade effluent, waste oil, liquid food waste, process chemicals, grease trap waste, interceptor waste, and septic tank waste.
In the UK, liquid waste that is classified as hazardous (due to its chemical composition, toxicity, or other hazardous properties) must be handled under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005.
-
How is liquid waste disposed of?
It depends on the type of liquid. Common methods include:
- Dewatering: separating solids for recycling
- Treatment: removing contaminants from wastewater
- Incineration: for hazardous chemicals and acids
- Composting: for liquid food waste
- Recycling/reuse: e.g., processed waste oil
Liquid waste should not be poured down drains, put on land or mixed with general waste unless you have the right permission, such as trade effluent consent.
-
What regulations apply to liquid waste?
Businesses must comply with:
- Environmental Protection Act 1990
- Duty of Care Regulations
- Hazardous Waste Regulations (where applicable)
- Water Industry Act (prohibiting unlicensed discharge)
You must store liquid waste securely, use licensed carriers, and keep duty-of-care documentation.
-
Where should liquid waste be disposed of?
Liquid waste must go to an authorised treatment facility. You cannot:
- Pour liquids into drains
- Pour oils onto land
- Put liquids into standard general waste bins
We collect your liquid waste and deliver it to the correct facility for secure treatment, recovery, or disposal.
-
Can liquid waste go down the drain?
No. Businesses should not pour liquid waste, oils, chemicals, sludge, or contaminated water down drains unless they have the correct permission and treatment process in place.
Business Waste Ltd can arrange compliant liquid waste collection and disposal through licensed carriers, helping you avoid pollution risks, blocked drains, and duty of care issues.
-
How often should grease traps be emptied?
Grease traps should be emptied when they reach 25% capacity with fat, oil, and grease. For most commercial kitchens, this means monthly or quarterly emptying, depending on cooking volume and trap size. Under drainage agreements and FOG (fats, oils, greases) regulations, businesses are responsible for maintaining their grease trap and ensuring accumulated waste is disposed of by a licensed carrier.
Business Waste arranges regular grease trap emptying for restaurants, hotels, schools, and food manufacturers across the UK.
