A large historic town sitting on the commuter belt into London, Colchester is one of Britain’s fastest-growing towns. It was once the capital city during Roman Britain and is thought to be the oldest recorded town in Britain. Connected to London via the A12, Colchester is also a short 45-minute drive from Stansted Airport and only 20 miles from the passenger ferry port of Harwich.

In 2014, Colchester was estimated to have around 180,420 residents, although substantial building works in the surrounding towns and villages, including Stanway and Wivenhoe, have seen this number shoot up. This is also increased by the large University of Essex that sits on the outskirts of Colchester and the Army barracks and garrison, which is home to an estimated 4,000 military personnel.

It is a prosperous area with its own football club and historic castle. During July 2012-June 2013, 74.9% of the working age population in Colchester were in employment. The council in Colchester are working to reduce unnecessary waste and improve recycling in the area. For homeowners and small businesses, this will include fortnightly collections for general rubbish, the introduction of wheelie bin collections, free recycling sacks and a second free green box so glass and cans are able to be separated when recycled.

In 2009/10, Defra found that 36% of household waste in Colchester was sent for reuse, recycling or composting; this increased to 40% in 2010/11.
