What are overweight charges?
Overweight charges are applied when the weight of waste in your container exceeds its weight allowance. All containers have a weight allowance, which varies based on the size of the container and the type of waste collected. Overweight charges are industry-wide. They’re applied because waste disposal is charged based on the weight rather than the volume collected.
-
How are overweight charges calculated?
Your bin or container is weighed as it’s taken from the floor with the waste inside. It’s then weighed again when the container is empty and this number is deducted from the first weight recorded. The information is then electronically sent to the cab and uploaded directly into the system for invoicing. There’s no human input during this process to avoid the risk of errors, and the bin is also chipped to avoid any confusion between containers.
Every vehicle that issues overweight charges is fitted with weighing equipment that’s calibrated by weights and measures. Regular checks are carried out on these vehicles, sampling and testing products. They also check the accuracy of equipment used for trade (scales and weighbridges). Once these checks are complete, the business responsible for the machinery is issued with a certificate of calibration.
-
How can I avoid overweight charges?
Ensure you’re aware of the maximum weight allowance for any bin or waste container you use and fill it within these limits. If you frequently receive overweight charges, it’s likely because you regularly produce more waste than the current service you have in place is designed to accommodate.
To avoid any further overweight charges, consider upgrading your waste collection service to either more or bigger bin sizes, or more frequent collections. Please contact our customer service team on 01904 207120 and they can explain your options, helping you get a fast solution to avoid any more overweight charges.

-
What is ISO certification and why is it important?
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental group that uses experts to set global standards for providing innovation and solutions to worldwide challenges. ISO certification confirms a management system, manufacturing process, service, or documentation procedure meets the requirements for standardisation and quality assurance.
ISO certification is provided by a third party – in our case Alcumus ISOQAR, which provides UKAS accredited ISO certification. The standards provide benchmarks for businesses to meet, ensuring achieving ISO certification demonstrates a well-run, stable business that’s ready to grow. There are more than 20,000 management standards, but the two we’ve achieved provide the following benefits:
- ISO 9001: 2015 – helps put our customers first.
- ISO 14001: 2015 – reduces our environmental impact.
