Waste Disposal
Sunderland

Business Waste provides a comprehensive waste management service to help you fulfil your recycling obligations. We recycle all types of trade waste, from packaging (including paper, cardboard and plastics) to construction materials (including bricks, wood and metal) and industrial waste. We can also advise you on what to recycle. To make your life easier, we will sort through your waste and separate the recyclables for you. Whether you are a supplier for dockside and port facilities or cater to the needs of football fans, we can recycle your waste reliably and cost-efficiently. This will not only pass on savings to you but enable you to clearly demonstrate you are legally compliant and environmentally responsible.

Recycling
Sunderland

Following major urban regeneration in the 1980s and 1990s, Sunderland is now a thriving 21st-century hub. The derelict brownfield sites left behind when mining and shipbuilding ceased have been redeveloped, and the industries replaced with companies in the automotive, science, technology and service sectors. New shops, cafes, bars and restaurants have opened up, and the riverside now features up-market residential apartments. Nissan remains the largest employer in the region, with the factory now producing over 500,000 cars annually. Sites such as Doxford International Business Park have stimulated the local economy, and crowds regularly flock to the Stadium of Light, the home of premier league football team Sunderland AFC.

Trust
Business Waste

This growth of new industries has brought new challenges for waste management. Despite the diversity, businesses still have a legal requirement to store, dispose of and recycle all their waste safely and responsibly. Waste management processes came under scrutiny when the Environment Agency identified the old Ryhope Landfill as being a hazard to groundwater and the local coastline. In May 2016, the new Local Development Plan reiterated the need for Sunderland’s businesses to meet national guidelines for waste disposal and recycling.

Got a
Question?

  • Can I add an additional bin to my service?

Yes, of course. We can provide extra bins for new waste streams to encourage recycling. Or if you’re simply producing more waste of the same type, we can add an extra or larger bin to your delivery and collection services if you’re at capacity.

  • Do you supply a duty of care certificate?

Yes, we provide a duty of care certificate (also known as a waste transfer note (WTN)) free of charge as part of your service agreement. This is included for free every time we collect any type of waste from your premises. Duty of care certificates are a legal requirement and licensed waste carriers can complete them for free – so you should never be charged for one.

Find out more about them in our guide to waste transfer notes.

  • How often will my bin be emptied?

We offer our customers a choice of daily, weekly, or fortnightly collections – so your bins are emptied as often as you want. Our expert team can advise on the correct waste collection schedule based on the type and amount of waste you produce and your business needs – such as your bin storage space and location.

  • What time will my bin be collected?

Bin collection times vary depending on your location, waste type, number and size of bins, and other factors. We work with all our customers to ensure your waste is always collected on time when it’s suitable for you and the licensed waste carrier. We can work around access times to arrange collections at convenient times.

  • What type of wheelie bins are available?

A range of two and four-wheel bins are available to store all sorts of waste on your premises. Explore our bins to see all available bins and information about what types and amounts of waste they can hold.

For any questions and answers about wheelie bin weight limits, sizes, locks, and anything else – read our bin FAQ guide.

  • How can we reduce our waste?

There are many ways to reduce the amount of waste we produce as individuals and businesses. A waste audit can highlight where you’re producing lots of waste as a starting place to cut down. Simple steps to reduce waste include efficient purchasing, buying reusable products, and recycling as much as possible. For more tips, read our guide about how to reduce waste.

If you have specific questions about reducing a certain type of waste, find the relevant page in Your Waste.

  • Do you collect any type of waste?

Yes! We can collect a wide range of waste types in various amounts from all sorts of businesses. From general waste to popular glass, paper, and packaging recycling – as well as specialist waste streams such as clinical, hazardous, and pharmaceutical waste – we work with licensed waste carriers able to safely collect all such types.

  • Is Business Waste ISO certified?

Yes, Business Waste has received Alcumus ISOQAR certification for:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – Quality management systems
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – Environmental management systems

These are both in the scope of registration for the provision of waste management brokerage.

  • What is ISO certification and why is it important?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental group that uses experts to set global standards for providing innovation and solutions to worldwide challenges. ISO certification confirms a management system, manufacturing process, service, or documentation procedure meets the requirements for standardisation and quality assurance.

ISO certification is provided by a third party – in our case Alcumus ISOQAR, which provides UKAS accredited ISO certification. The standards provide benchmarks for businesses to meet, ensuring achieving ISO certification demonstrates a well-run, stable business that’s ready to grow. There are more than 20,000 management standards, but the two we’ve achieved provide the following benefits:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – helps put our customers first.
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – reduces our environmental impact.
