Recycling
Swansea

Sat on the sandy south-west Welsh coast, Swansea is the second largest city within Wales after Cardiff. It’s also classed as the 25th largest city in the whole of the United Kingdom. In 2014 it was found to have a population of 241,300. In 2011, when the city, metropolitan and urban areas were all combined together, the census concluded there were a total of 462,000 residents.

Since 2011, Swansea has begun an expansion into becoming a larger region known as the ‘Swansea Bay City Region’. This move has seen a number of councils coming together, including Tenby and other areas in west Wales. With the added areas, it is thought the population will rise to over 685,000. This region will be led by chairman, Sir Terry Matthews, who is working towards boosting the economy and helping the area become more profitable.

During the 19th-century, Swansea was a notable location for the copper industry. Nowadays, visitors may visit The Grand Theatre (launched in 1897), the Palace Theatre (from 1888), or on occasion, the National Eisteddfod festival. Additionally, many seek to try the Local Gower salt marsh lamb, cockles and laverbread sourced from in and around the Loughor estuary. There are also a number of listed buildings in Swansea, including Swansea Castle, the Tabernacle Chapel and the Swansea Guildhall.

Trust
Business Waste

In 2014, Swansea jumped from sitting as 20th out of 22 local areas when it came to recycling, to 10th – in just one year. In the second quarter of the year, Swansea had recycled 59.54% of the waste collected. The dramatic changes illustrated the desire overall to improve waste management in Swansea. The goal for the local area is to be recycling 70% of all waste by 2025.

Got a
Question?

  • Can I add an additional bin to my service?

Yes, of course. We can provide extra bins for new waste streams to encourage recycling. Or if you’re simply producing more waste of the same type, we can add an extra or larger bin to your delivery and collection services if you’re at capacity.

  • Do you supply a duty of care certificate?

Yes, we provide a duty of care certificate (also known as a waste transfer note (WTN)) free of charge as part of your service agreement. This is included for free every time we collect any type of waste from your premises. Duty of care certificates are a legal requirement and licensed waste carriers can complete them for free – so you should never be charged for one.

Find out more about them in our guide to waste transfer notes.

  • How often will my bin be emptied?

We offer our customers a choice of daily, weekly, or fortnightly collections – so your bins are emptied as often as you want. Our expert team can advise on the correct waste collection schedule based on the type and amount of waste you produce and your business needs – such as your bin storage space and location.

  • What time will my bin be collected?

Bin collection times vary depending on your location, waste type, number and size of bins, and other factors. We work with all our customers to ensure your waste is always collected on time when it’s suitable for you and the licensed waste carrier. We can work around access times to arrange collections at convenient times.

  • What type of wheelie bins are available?

A range of two and four-wheel bins are available to store all sorts of waste on your premises. Explore our bins to see all available bins and information about what types and amounts of waste they can hold.

For any questions and answers about wheelie bin weight limits, sizes, locks, and anything else – read our bin FAQ guide.

  • How can we reduce our waste?

There are many ways to reduce the amount of waste we produce as individuals and businesses. A waste audit can highlight where you’re producing lots of waste as a starting place to cut down. Simple steps to reduce waste include efficient purchasing, buying reusable products, and recycling as much as possible. For more tips, read our guide about how to reduce waste.

If you have specific questions about reducing a certain type of waste, find the relevant page in Your Waste.

  • Do you collect any type of waste?

Yes! We can collect a wide range of waste types in various amounts from all sorts of businesses. From general waste to popular glass, paper, and packaging recycling – as well as specialist waste streams such as clinical, hazardous, and pharmaceutical waste – we work with licensed waste carriers able to safely collect all such types.

  • Is Business Waste ISO certified?

Yes, Business Waste has received Alcumus ISOQAR certification for:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – Quality management systems
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – Environmental management systems

These are both in the scope of registration for the provision of waste management brokerage.

  • What is ISO certification and why is it important?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental group that uses experts to set global standards for providing innovation and solutions to worldwide challenges. ISO certification confirms a management system, manufacturing process, service, or documentation procedure meets the requirements for standardisation and quality assurance.

ISO certification is provided by a third party – in our case Alcumus ISOQAR, which provides UKAS accredited ISO certification. The standards provide benchmarks for businesses to meet, ensuring achieving ISO certification demonstrates a well-run, stable business that’s ready to grow. There are more than 20,000 management standards, but the two we’ve achieved provide the following benefits:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – helps put our customers first.
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – reduces our environmental impact.
