Barnsley
Found in the heart of Yorkshire, Barnsley is the quintessential northern town and is home to nearly a hundred thousand people. The largest settlement in the surrounding Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, Barnsley itself is very much a local business and cultural hub with its own waste management requirements and concerns.
Like many towns in the region, Barnsley has a rich industrial heritage. This is due to the long history of coal mining and glass making that centred in the city. While much of the heavy industry has long departed, the city still enjoys a vibrant economy with numerous places of interest. As the industries change the needs of the town’s rubbish disposal changes with them, and with a number of new developments having been recently completed, there are numerous opportunities as well.
The town also boasts a long and storied history. It was mentioned in the ancient Domesday Book and has been at the forefront of Yorkshire’s history ever since. This heritage is there to be seen at local museums such as the Elsecar Heritage Centre, and the Cannon Hall Museum, with Worsbrough Mill being the place to experience the town’s industrial legacy up close. Bordering the beautiful Peak District, Barnsley is surrounded by verdant green parkland and picturesque villages, meaning the area is very much a mixture of urban and rural – and has waste requirements concomitant with both.
As with many similar cities, the decline of certain industries offered difficulties, but Barnsley in 2017 is very much a city on the upswing with numerous significant developments having recently taken place. All of which are set to bring challenges and opportunities for the waste management industry.
Recently completed projects in the area have included the new Barnsley interchange, a new digital media centre and the Gateway Plaza at Town End. The new Barnsley People’s Museum and Archives Centre is another project in Barnsley town centre that is already bringing in extra business and footfall to the town.

Got a
Question?
-
Can I add an additional bin to my service?
Yes, of course. We can provide extra bins for new waste streams to encourage recycling. Or if you’re simply producing more waste of the same type, we can add an extra or larger bin to your delivery and collection services if you’re at capacity.
-
Do you supply a duty of care certificate?
Yes, we provide a duty of care certificate (also known as a waste transfer note (WTN)) free of charge as part of your service agreement. This is included for free every time we collect any type of waste from your premises. Duty of care certificates are a legal requirement and licensed waste carriers can complete them for free – so you should never be charged for one.
Find out more about them in our guide to waste transfer notes.
-
How often will my bin be emptied?
We offer our customers a choice of daily, weekly, or fortnightly collections – so your bins are emptied as often as you want. Our expert team can advise on the correct waste collection schedule based on the type and amount of waste you produce and your business needs – such as your bin storage space and location.
-
What time will my bin be collected?
Bin collection times vary depending on your location, waste type, number and size of bins, and other factors. We work with all our customers to ensure your waste is always collected on time when it’s suitable for you and the licensed waste carrier. We can work around access times to arrange collections at convenient times.
-
What type of wheelie bins are available?
A range of two and four-wheel bins are available to store all sorts of waste on your premises. Explore our bins to see all available bins and information about what types and amounts of waste they can hold.
For any questions and answers about wheelie bin weight limits, sizes, locks, and anything else – read our bin FAQ guide.
-
How can we reduce our waste?
There are many ways to reduce the amount of waste we produce as individuals and businesses. A waste audit can highlight where you’re producing lots of waste as a starting place to cut down. Simple steps to reduce waste include efficient purchasing, buying reusable products, and recycling as much as possible. For more tips, read our guide about how to reduce waste.

-
Is Business Waste ISO certified?
Yes, Business Waste has received Alcumus ISOQAR certification for:
- ISO 9001: 2015 – Quality management systems
- ISO 14001: 2015 – Environmental management systems
These are both in the scope of registration for the provision of waste management brokerage.
-
What is ISO certification and why is it important?
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental group that uses experts to set global standards for providing innovation and solutions to worldwide challenges. ISO certification confirms a management system, manufacturing process, service, or documentation procedure meets the requirements for standardisation and quality assurance.
ISO certification is provided by a third party – in our case Alcumus ISOQAR, which provides UKAS accredited ISO certification. The standards provide benchmarks for businesses to meet, ensuring achieving ISO certification demonstrates a well-run, stable business that’s ready to grow. There are more than 20,000 management standards, but the two we’ve achieved provide the following benefits:
- ISO 9001: 2015 – helps put our customers first.
- ISO 14001: 2015 – reduces our environmental impact.
