Waste Management

nverness is known as the capital of the Scottish Highlands and, as such, is an important business hub for the area. It has also been heralded as one of Europe’s fastest-growing cities. The current population of the city is around 47,000, while the wide area including Westhill and Culloden is home to around 60,000 people.

In recent years, the city has experienced huge economic growth. In the decade from 1998, for example, Inverness and the central Highlands recorded an 86 per cent increase in average economic productivity. This was the biggest growth per person of anywhere in Scotland and was also the second largest growth rate in the UK overall.

Another claim to fame for the city is that it is regularly cited as one of the top places to live in Britain to enjoy a high quality of life and, in 2014, it was named as Scotland’s happiest place and Britain’s second happiest location. In 2015, the city was once again announced as Scotland’s happiest place. This happiness would undoubtedly be marred if local businesses could not provide the standard of service expected by local residents and visitors alike, which is why Business Waste is on-hand to take the waste management strain and ensure that local companies can achieve a clean sweep when it comes to keeping their customers and the wider community happy.

Waste Collections

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise-funded Centre for Health Science was set up to attract more medical companies to the area but an increase in businesses and associated trade waste does not have to have an adverse effect on the health of the local environment. Waste management can be a time-consuming chore but our waste management Inverness experts can ensure that any kind of waste can be dealt with in the most environmentally responsible, convenient and affordable way possible. We are available all day, every day to help local businesses meet their legal and social obligations by offering everything from tailor-made collections for food, hazardous and confidential waste to equipment such as wheelie bins, skips, compactors and containers. Find out how we can help you by getting in touch today.

Waste Disposal

Our aim is to send as little waste as possible to landfill, something which demonstrates our green credentials and can really boost the ‘green appeal’ of our clients. We can make the process of recycling incredibly easy and fuss-free by providing suitable collection receptacles and a regular disposal schedule to ensure that the needs of businesses are fully met – as well as those of the environment. We handle all kinds of recycling, including wood, glass, plastics, paper, cardboard and scrap metal to ensure that going green is never a chore for Inverness businesses. We take the load so that local firms can concentrate on pleasing Highland tourists or designing and manufacturing the latest generation of diabetes diagnostic kits (one of the area’s most recent achievements).

  • Can I add an additional bin to my service?

  • Do you supply a duty of care certificate?

Yes, we provide a duty of care certificate (also known as a waste transfer note (WTN)) free of charge as part of your service agreement. This is included for free every time we collect any type of waste from your premises. Duty of care certificates are a legal requirement and licensed waste carriers can complete them for free – so you should never be charged for one.

Find out more about them in our guide to waste transfer notes.

We offer our customers a choice of daily, weekly, or fortnightly collections – so your bins are emptied as often as you want. Our expert team can advise on the correct waste collection schedule based on the type and amount of waste you produce and your business needs – such as your bin storage space and location.

  • What time will my bin be collected?

Bin collection times vary depending on your location, waste type, number and size of bins, and other factors. We work with all our customers to ensure your waste is always collected on time when it’s suitable for you and the licensed waste carrier. We can work around access times to arrange collections at convenient times.

Simple steps to reduce waste include efficient purchasing, buying reusable products, and recycling as much as possible. For more tips, read our guide about how to reduce waste.

If you have specific questions about reducing a certain type of waste, find the relevant page in Your Waste.

  • Is Business Waste ISO certified?

Yes, Business Waste has received Alcumus ISOQAR certification for:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – Quality management systems
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – Environmental management systems

These are both in the scope of registration for the provision of waste management brokerage.

  • What is ISO certification and why is it important?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental group that uses experts to set global standards for providing innovation and solutions to worldwide challenges. ISO certification confirms a management system, manufacturing process, service, or documentation procedure meets the requirements for standardisation and quality assurance.

ISO certification is provided by a third party – in our case Alcumus ISOQAR, which provides UKAS accredited ISO certification. The standards provide benchmarks for businesses to meet, ensuring achieving ISO certification demonstrates a well-run, stable business that’s ready to grow. There are more than 20,000 management standards, but the two we’ve achieved provide the following benefits:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – helps put our customers first.
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – reduces our environmental impact.
