Waste Disposal

The government has set a goal for 50% of waste to be recycled by 2020 and this is something Business Waste can assist Wigan businesses with. We pride ourselves on striving for 0% landfill and can offer expert advice on where you can improve your recycling efforts. For example, there are over 50 types of plastic products that can be recycled, even if it may seem like one of the harder items to repurpose. This includes HDPE, which is used for milk bottles, LDPE which is used for supermarket shopping bags, PET which is used for drinks bottles, PS which is used for takeaway packaging and PVC which is used for clingfilm. We can also help your business recycle cardboard and paper, metal, green waste and soil, building and construction waste and bricks and wood.

With a population of 103,608 (according to the 2011 census), Wigan is a town located to the north-west of Greater Manchester, sitting upon the River Douglas. It is bordered by Bolton, Warrington and Manchester. It is thought that Wigan first became a borough in 1246 thanks to the issuing of a charter by King Henry III. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, Wigan was one of four boroughs within Lancashire that possessed Royal charters (the others being Liverpool, Preston and Lancaster).

Since then, the town made popular by George Orwell’s The Road to Wigan Pier has gone on to thrive as an industrial hub thanks to its location along the Leeds and Liverpool canal. Today, it is home to many high-street stores in the Arcade shopping centre, as well as restaurants and bars, and is a popular commuter town thanks to its excellent transport links. This undoubtedly means a rise in commercial waste which local businesses need to find a way to tackle.

Business Waste

In 2014, Wigan was found to have the most improved recycling rate within the north-west and, from 2011 to 2013, had one of the best nationwide. In 2011/12, the borough was responsible for recycling 36.79% of its waste and this rose in 2012/13 to 48.52%. The result of these increased efforts was a saving to the community of over £1 million in disposal costs. It also meant the amount of waste being sent on to landfill was reduced by 17 per cent. At Business Waste, we can help business owners get on top of their recycling and waste management to keep companies compliant with the law and the area thriving for future generations.

  • Can I add an additional bin to my service?

  • Do you supply a duty of care certificate?

Yes, we provide a duty of care certificate (also known as a waste transfer note (WTN)) free of charge as part of your service agreement. Duty of care certificates are a legal requirement and licensed waste carriers can complete them for free – so you should never be charged for one.

Find out more about them in our guide to waste transfer notes.

Bin collection times vary depending on your location, waste type, number and size of bins, and other factors. We work with all our customers to ensure your waste is always collected on time when it’s suitable for you and the licensed waste carrier. We can work around access times to arrange collections at convenient times.

  • Is Business Waste ISO certified?

Yes, Business Waste has received Alcumus ISOQAR certification for:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – Quality management systems
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – Environmental management systems

These are both in the scope of registration for the provision of waste management brokerage.

  • What is ISO certification and why is it important?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental group that uses experts to set global standards for providing innovation and solutions to worldwide challenges. ISO certification confirms a management system, manufacturing process, service, or documentation procedure meets the requirements for standardisation and quality assurance.

ISO certification is provided by a third party – in our case Alcumus ISOQAR, which provides UKAS accredited ISO certification. The standards provide benchmarks for businesses to meet, ensuring achieving ISO certification demonstrates a well-run, stable business that’s ready to grow. There are more than 20,000 management standards, but the two we’ve achieved provide the following benefits:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – helps put our customers first.
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – reduces our environmental impact.
