Huddersfield has a population of around 162,000, making it the 11th biggest town in the United Kingdom. Now a flourishing market town, it rose to prominence during the Industrial Revolution due to the introduction of machinery in textile mills, which caused civil unrest among workers. Today, industry continues to dominate the local economy, despite the university being the town’s largest employer. The town predominantly centres on manufacturing, with several local companies operating in the chemical and engineering industries.
Visitors can enjoy Victorian architecture such as Victoria Tower on Castle Hill. The Grade I listed Huddersfield railway station was once described by former Poet Laureate John Betjeman as “the most splendid station façade in England.” After undergoing recent renovation, which cost £4 million and took 550 days to complete, the station also won the Europa Nostra award for European architecture. Other landmarks of interest include The George Hotel, St Peter’s Church, Beaumont Park, and the Pack Horse Centre.
In terms of the arts and entertainment, Huddersfield Choral Society claims to be the UK’s leading choral society. However, the city also celebrates more modern genres of music at the annual Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. The Huddersfield Festival of Light and the Huddersfield Literature Festival are notable events too, while the town is proud of its status as the birthplace of rugby league. The town’s biggest team is Huddersfield Giants, who were founded in 1895 and currently play in the European Super League.
But as with any town that boasts an active economy and events schedule, the community must also stay on top of its waste management duties. According to the latest statistics, Kirklees local authority only recycles around 30 percent of its waste, while permits have recently been introduced at the town’s waste recycling centres.
