Waste Disposal

Croydon has regularly been one of the best performing boroughs in London when it comes to recycling. The percentage of waste recycled in the borough has risen consistently, reaching an impressive 44% in 2011. That same year the borough was ranked the sixth best in London for recycling, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ league table.

Business Waste can make sure your company complies with Croydon’s strict regulations. As well as helping your business reduce its environmental waste impact, our recycling services will help your company avoid paying high landfill taxes. Business Waste’s recycling service processes all kinds of recycling, including cardboard, plastic, paper, glass, wood, biomass, garden waste, soil, scrap metal and WEEE (electrical waste such as appliances)

The town is a bustling business centre which also boasts an exciting, lucrative night life. For decades it’s been in an almost constant state of growth, and that process shows no sign of slowing following the introduction of the Croydon Vision 2020 urban planning initiative. Businesses are flocking to Croydon, its vibrant shopping facilities are constantly expanding, and more and more people are moving to the town and its surrounding borough.

Undoubtedly, Croydon’s growth presents massive opportunities and benefits for the community. But like much of London, this expansion also presents new challenges when it comes to waste disposal. Commercial and trade waste has been a perennial problem. In 2016 the borough council was forced to implement a widespread ban of daytime business waste collections in an attempt to prevent illegal fly tipping. The local authorities take a strong approach to any kind of illegal waste disposal. So far, the council’s Don’t Mess With Croydon – Take Pride campaign has prosecuted 143 people for offences ranging from fly-tipping to littering. The eleven most recent culprits, prosecuted earlier this year, were forced to pay a total of £9,414 in fines and court fees. Meanwhile, since 2013 the local council has applied a compulsory recycling policy to households in the borough, with residents not following the strict regulations at risk of an £80 on the spot penalty.

Business Waste

In a community as dynamic and heavily populated as Croydon, finding a reliable, effective business waste disposal solution can be a challenge.

  • Can I add an additional bin to my service?

  • Do you supply a duty of care certificate?

Yes, we provide a duty of care certificate (also known as a waste transfer note (WTN)) free of charge as part of your service agreement. This is included for free every time we collect any type of waste from your premises. Duty of care certificates are a legal requirement and licensed waste carriers can complete them for free – so you should never be charged for one.

Find out more about them in our guide to waste transfer notes.

We offer our customers a choice of daily, weekly, or fortnightly collections – so your bins are emptied as often as you want. Our expert team can advise on the correct waste collection schedule based on the type and amount of waste you produce and your business needs – such as your bin storage space and location.

Bin collection times vary depending on your location, waste type, number and size of bins, and other factors. We work with all our customers to ensure your waste is always collected on time when it’s suitable for you and the licensed waste carrier. We can work around access times to arrange collections at convenient times.

  • How can we reduce our waste?

There are many ways to reduce the amount of waste we produce as individuals and businesses. A waste audit can highlight where you’re producing lots of waste as a starting place to cut down. Simple steps to reduce waste include efficient purchasing, buying reusable products, and recycling as much as possible. For more tips, read our guide about how to reduce waste.

If you have specific questions about reducing a certain type of waste, find the relevant page in Your Waste.

  • Is Business Waste ISO certified?

Yes, Business Waste has received Alcumus ISOQAR certification for:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – Quality management systems
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – Environmental management systems

These are both in the scope of registration for the provision of waste management brokerage.

  • What is ISO certification and why is it important?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental group that uses experts to set global standards for providing innovation and solutions to worldwide challenges. ISO certification confirms a management system, manufacturing process, service, or documentation procedure meets the requirements for standardisation and quality assurance.

ISO certification is provided by a third party – in our case Alcumus ISOQAR, which provides UKAS accredited ISO certification. The standards provide benchmarks for businesses to meet, ensuring achieving ISO certification demonstrates a well-run, stable business that’s ready to grow. There are more than 20,000 management standards, but the two we’ve achieved provide the following benefits:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – helps put our customers first.
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – reduces our environmental impact.
