Welwyn Garden City

Welwyn Garden City is a large town located some 18 miles north of London in the County of Hertfordshire. It is the second of the planned cities developed by Sir Ebenezer Howard in the early 1920s to provide much-needed affordable housing for people living in the South East.

The town took inspiration from Letchworth Garden City, which was the first Garden City created by Howard. The idea behind creating planned garden cities was to combine the benefits of country living with the convenience of a town.

As a result, Welwyn Garden City is centred around a scenic parkway which provides almost a mile of public gardens which can be used by local residents. The parkway is bordered by large Edwardian-style houses on the west side and modern housing on the east side.

Today, Welwyn Garden City is ranked 112 in the top 250 places to live in the UK and is popular with commuters due to its close proximity to the A1 motorway and the mainline railway station which has direct trains to London Kings Cross.

The town’s excellent transport connections have also attracted some major employers to the area. These include supermarket giant Tesco, online retailers and and printer giant Xerox. Welwyn Garden City is also popular with tech companies, with Computacenter based in nearby Hatfield and HSBC operating one of their largest global data centres on the outskirts of the town.

Business Waste

With such a diverse range of employers, Welwyn Garden City has unique problems with regards to waste management and disposal. High-tech companies require secure data disposal and environmentally friendly methods for recycling computer equipment. This is particularly important for companies such as Xerox that have to manage the recycling of waste print products such as toner and ink while remaining in compliance with new WEEE recycling regulations.

Find out more about them in our guide to waste transfer notes.

  • Is Business Waste ISO certified?

Yes, Business Waste has received Alcumus ISOQAR certification for:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – Quality management systems
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – Environmental management systems

These are both in the scope of registration for the provision of waste management brokerage.

  • What is ISO certification and why is it important?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental group that uses experts to set global standards for providing innovation and solutions to worldwide challenges. ISO certification confirms a management system, manufacturing process, service, or documentation procedure meets the requirements for standardisation and quality assurance.

ISO certification is provided by a third party – in our case Alcumus ISOQAR, which provides UKAS accredited ISO certification. The standards provide benchmarks for businesses to meet, ensuring achieving ISO certification demonstrates a well-run, stable business that’s ready to grow. There are more than 20,000 management standards, but the two we’ve achieved provide the following benefits:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – helps put our customers first.
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – reduces our environmental impact.
