Waste Disposal
Suffolk

Recycling is important to the Suffolk community, which is constantly striving to improve how much can be re-used. It not only helps the environment but it also puts money back into this thriving county. Of the 200 million metric tonnes of waste that the UK produces in a year, around 44% of this can be recovered through recycling. The European Union has set the UK the target for recycling at 50% of all waste by 2020. We pride ourselves on achieving 0% landfill and hope to help your business pride itself on this accolade too. Being a green business is a great merit to hold.

Our prices are competitive and we can save you up to 20% on your current costs. We can also save you time with our fast quotes and expert waste management strategies, provided to you by our in-house experts. We want to help keep Suffolk a pristine and idyllic county – and are here to support you in doing this for your business.

Recycling
Suffolk

In mid-2015, the population of Suffolk was estimated to be around 741,900 residents. In 2011, the census found that 133,384 people were living in Ipswich alone. A county fill with archaeological sites from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, along with burial grounds from the Anglo Saxons, Suffolk is split into seven districts – Ipswich, Suffolk Coastal, Waveney, Mid Suffolk, Babergh, St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath.

As a county, Suffolk works hard on recycling waste and in 2015/16, 53% of household waste was used again. This is double the amount from ten years previous and over four times the amount from 1996/7. In figures, this was just over 180,000 tonnes recycled in 2015/16, compared with just over 90,000 in 2003/4. There is still more to be done. In 2013, the cost of Suffolk’s waste was £15.5m for the 53% that is recycling and composting and, despite collecting less waste (at 47%), it cost £20.5 million. That’s an extra £5 million in costs to the community for not recycling as effectively as possible.

Suffolk is an idyllic, picturesque county in the East Anglian UK landscape, and was once the scene for John Constable’s rural landscape paintings during the 1800s, in which the renowned artist captured parts of Dedham Vale, Flatford and East Bergholt.

It is an area packed with winding country lanes, nature reserves and quaint chocolate-box historic villages, plus a wide-spanning agricultural landscape. Tractors on the road are a common sight. Suffolk is also home to some larger towns, including Ipswich, which sits along the estuary of the River Orwell, and the historic market town of Bury St Edmunds. The county is bordered with Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex.

Got a
Question?

  • Can I add an additional bin to my service?

Yes, of course. We can provide extra bins for new waste streams to encourage recycling. Or if you’re simply producing more waste of the same type, we can add an extra or larger bin to your delivery and collection services if you’re at capacity.

  • Do you supply a duty of care certificate?

Yes, we provide a duty of care certificate (also known as a waste transfer note (WTN)) free of charge as part of your service agreement. This is included for free every time we collect any type of waste from your premises. Duty of care certificates are a legal requirement and licensed waste carriers can complete them for free – so you should never be charged for one.

Find out more about them in our guide to waste transfer notes.

  • How often will my bin be emptied?

We offer our customers a choice of daily, weekly, or fortnightly collections – so your bins are emptied as often as you want. Our expert team can advise on the correct waste collection schedule based on the type and amount of waste you produce and your business needs – such as your bin storage space and location.

  • What time will my bin be collected?

Bin collection times vary depending on your location, waste type, number and size of bins, and other factors. We work with all our customers to ensure your waste is always collected on time when it’s suitable for you and the licensed waste carrier. We can work around access times to arrange collections at convenient times.

  • What type of wheelie bins are available?

A range of two and four-wheel bins are available to store all sorts of waste on your premises. Explore our bins to see all available bins and information about what types and amounts of waste they can hold.

For any questions and answers about wheelie bin weight limits, sizes, locks, and anything else – read our bin FAQ guide.

  • How can we reduce our waste?

There are many ways to reduce the amount of waste we produce as individuals and businesses. A waste audit can highlight where you’re producing lots of waste as a starting place to cut down. Simple steps to reduce waste include efficient purchasing, buying reusable products, and recycling as much as possible. For more tips, read our guide about how to reduce waste.

If you have specific questions about reducing a certain type of waste, find the relevant page in Your Waste.

  • Do you collect any type of waste?

Yes! We can collect a wide range of waste types in various amounts from all sorts of businesses. From general waste to popular glass, paper, and packaging recycling – as well as specialist waste streams such as clinical, hazardous, and pharmaceutical waste – we work with licensed waste carriers able to safely collect all such types.

  • Is Business Waste ISO certified?

Yes, Business Waste has received Alcumus ISOQAR certification for:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – Quality management systems
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – Environmental management systems

These are both in the scope of registration for the provision of waste management brokerage.

  • What is ISO certification and why is it important?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental group that uses experts to set global standards for providing innovation and solutions to worldwide challenges. ISO certification confirms a management system, manufacturing process, service, or documentation procedure meets the requirements for standardisation and quality assurance.

ISO certification is provided by a third party – in our case Alcumus ISOQAR, which provides UKAS accredited ISO certification. The standards provide benchmarks for businesses to meet, ensuring achieving ISO certification demonstrates a well-run, stable business that’s ready to grow. There are more than 20,000 management standards, but the two we’ve achieved provide the following benefits:

    • ISO 9001: 2015 – helps put our customers first.
    • ISO 14001: 2015 – reduces our environmental impact.
