As of the 31 March 2025, all UK businesses and organisations with 10 or more full time staff must ensure that food waste, glass waste, paper and cardboard waste, and mixed recyclables (including metal) is placed into seperate bins and containers and not mixed with general waste.

The Environment Agency has announced enforcement action, including charges of £118 per hour for investigating businesses that have not seperated their waste streams.

From October 2026, Defra’s Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) system will become mandatory for all licensed waste sites in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Large organisations that generate regulated waste streams including hazardous waste, clinical waste, and certain industrial waste, will be required to record every waste movement digitally within 48 hours.

DWT replaces paper-based Waste Transfer Notes with a digital record system, providing a fully traceable audit trail from waste production to final disposal. For multi-site organisations, DWT will require waste management contractors to ensure all collections are properly recorded and reportable through the new digital system.
