What is a front-end loader?
A front-end loader bin, or FEL, is a large static metal waste container designed for businesses producing high volumes of dry, compactable waste. Dense materials can exceed collection weight limits before the container is full. It has no wheels and normally stays in one position on your site between collections.
A specialist front-loading collection vehicle uses hydraulic lifting equipment to raise and empty the container into the vehicle before returning it to its position. Once positioned, the FEL remains static and is emptied using specialist collection equipment. Lockable options are available for FELs.
FEL bin sizes
Front end loader bins are available in three sizes to suit the waste storage and removal needs of many businesses. Choose the size that easily fits on your premises and has a capacity that meets the amount of waste you produce.
Weight limits vary depending on the type of waste you store in an FEL container. The number of full waste bags you can store in each also changes based on the waste type and size of bin you use.
Allow enough space for the FEL itself and clear vehicle access for the front-loading collection vehicle. Check gates, overhead restrictions and turning space before ordering.
- 6-yard FEL: around 4,600L / approximately 60 bags
- 8-yard FEL: around 6,000L / approximately 70 bags
- 10-yard FEL: around 7,600L / approximately 80 bags
If you produce more waste, then consider a rear end loader with a larger capacity.
Is a front end loader bin right for my business?
A front end loader can suit sites where large wheelie bins fill too quickly, but a higher-capacity rear end loader would take up more space than required. FELs are generally smaller and more box-shaped than rear end loaders, meaning they are easier to accommodate with limited site space.
With capacities from around 4,600 to 7,600 litres, FELs work well for regular volumes of dry general waste, cardboard and recycling at warehouses, retailers, distribution sites, factories and other high-volume premises.
The top-loading lid provides access for depositing the agreed dry waste stream. Keeping waste contained and separated correctly supports your Duty of Care responsibilities. Higher capacity can reduce the number of smaller containers or collections required where waste volumes justify an FEL. Overall cost depends on the container size, waste stream, location and collection frequency.
Choose a FEL where you need high capacity but have less space available. Consider a rear end loader where waste volumes exceed the largest FEL capacity and the site has room for a larger container.
