Orange infectious waste bags
Orange infectious waste bags are used in England for suitable clinical waste that is infectious but does not contain medicinal or chemical contamination. This can include contaminated dressings, swabs, PPE and similar soft clinical materials.
Orange and yellow clinical waste bags are not interchangeable. Orange bags are suitable for infectious waste without medicinal or chemical contamination. Yellow bags are suitable where infectious waste is also contaminated with medicines or chemicals.

When should I use an orange infectious waste bag?
An orange bag is appropriate where clinical waste has been assessed as infectious but does not also contain medicines or chemicals. Blood or bodily-fluid contamination does not automatically determine the waste stream. The waste should be assessed for infection risk before the appropriate container is selected.
Businesses that produce clinical waste have a Duty of Care to classify, separate, store and transfer it appropriately. Correct segregation prevents waste from being sent through an inappropriate treatment route and can avoid unnecessary treatment costs.
When do I need an orange sharps bin?
An orange sharps bin is used for sharps that are not contaminated with medicines. This can include used needles, blades or other sharp instruments.
Sharps should never be placed into an orange infectious waste bag because the bag can be punctured and does not provide the required rigid containment.
If sharps are contaminated with medicines, a yellow-lidded sharps container is normally required. Cytotoxic or cytostatic contaminated sharps use the purple-coded stream instead.
