Nationwide Asbestos Removal & Collection

Commercial Asbestos Removal Services

Business Waste arranges commercial asbestos removal for business premises, construction sites, landlords, facilities managers and organisations responsible for older buildings across the UK with no hidden charges. Asbestos-containing materials can be found in insulation, lagging, roofing sheets, floor tiles, textured coatings, boards, and fireproofing materials.

We can help coordinate asbestos surveys, risk assessments, secure containment, hazardous waste consignment notes, and disposal at authorised facilities. Duty of Care documentation is provided at no additional cost.

If asbestos is present or suspected, do not disturb it. A qualified survey or risk assessment should confirm the material, condition, and removal route before work begins.

Our asbestos removal process

  1. Tell us about the site

Share the premises type, location, suspected asbestos material, access conditions, and whether the work is linked to maintenance, refurbishment, demolition, or an emergency.

  2. Arrange a survey or risk assessment

If the material has not already been identified, a competent asbestos surveyor or analyst can confirm what is present. The proposed work is then assessed to determine whether a licensed contractor is required.

  3. Plan safe removal and containment

The contractor sets out the safe method of work, including access controls, PPE, containment, waste packaging, labelling, and collection arrangements.

  4. Remove and package asbestos waste

Asbestos-containing materials are removed, double-bagged or wrapped where required, labelled, and stored securely before transport.

  5. Licensed collection and disposal

Registered carriers move asbestos waste with the correct hazardous waste consignment paperwork and take it to an authorised hazardous waste facility.

When is licensed asbestos removal required?

Not every asbestos removal job legally requires an HSE-licensed contractor. The requirement depends on the material, its condition and the work being carried out.

Higher-risk work must normally be undertaken by an HSE-licensed asbestos contractor. This includes work involving asbestos sprayed coatings, most asbestos insulation and lagging, and most removal of asbestos insulating board.

Some lower-risk activities involving materials such as asbestos cement, floor tiles or textured coatings can be non-licensed. Certain lower-risk jobs still fall into notifiable non-licensed work (NNLW) and have additional requirements.

Our team can help coordinate the appropriate contractor once the material and proposed work have been assessed.

Planning licensed work: licensable asbestos work normally needs to be notified to the relevant enforcing authority at least 14 days before it begins. Factor this into refurbishment, demolition and shutdown schedules.

How is asbestos disposed of?

Asbestos waste must be sealed, labelled, collected, and transported by registered waste carriers. It cannot go in general waste bins, standard skips, or mixed construction waste.

We ensure your waste is taken to approved facilities and the correct consignment notes provided for your records. This helps your business meet duty of care requirements and avoid unsafe or illegal disposal.

Asbestos removal for commercial buildings and sites

Asbestos is common in older commercial, industrial, and public buildings. The right removal route depends on the material, condition, location, and whether the work is part of refurbishment, demolition, maintenance, or emergency repair.

Common sectors we help:

  • Office buildings and retail outlets: floor tiles, textured coatings, ceiling panels, old fireproofing, and plant room materials
  • Schools, hospitals, and care homes: asbestos-containing boards, insulation, ducts, pipe lagging, and older building materials
  • Hotels: boiler rooms, ceiling tiles, service ducts, old flooring, and refurbishment waste
  • Factories and warehouses: asbestos cement sheets, roofing, insulation, gaskets, and old plant equipment
  • Heritage buildings: mixed asbestos-containing materials discovered during maintenance or renovation
  • Construction and property development: refurbishment, demolition, strip-out and redevelopment where asbestos-containing materials must be identified and managed before intrusive work

Services can include:

  • Full building clearance after refurbishment or renovation
  • Removal of contaminated materials such as insulation, lagging, or asbestos cement sheets
  • Safe removal of disturbed asbestos waste after structural alterations
  • Handling of small-scale asbestos waste (e.g. isolated tiles or materials)
  • Scheduling to fit around working hours or out-of-hours operations to minimise disruption

One-off removal projects and coordinated asbestos work across multi-site property portfolios.

HAZARDOUS WASTE

What containers are used for asbestos waste?

Asbestos waste must be sealed, labelled, and kept secure before collection. The right containment depends on the material type, amount, and whether the asbestos is loose, wrapped, bagged, bonded, or mixed with demolition waste.

Common containers we supply:

  • Asbestos waste bags: heavy-duty, labelled bags for suitable small asbestos waste items
  • Lockable bins: for secure temporary storage before collection
  • Hazardous waste skips: for larger asbestos-containing materials where agreed and properly contained
  • Sealed containers: for demolition debris or contaminated materials that need secure transport

Asbestos waste should not be placed in standard skips, wheelie bins, general waste containers, or recycling bins. Standard agreed containers are supplied without rental or delivery charges. Your quote confirms the removal, collection and disposal costs.

Commercial asbestos laws businesses need to know

For non-domestic premises, the dutyholder must identify known or presumed ACMs, record their location and condition, assess the risk of disturbance and maintain an asbestos management plan.

If a building was built or refurbished before 2000, HSE says you should assume asbestos could be present unless there is strong evidence otherwise.

HSE describes asbestos as the greatest cause of work-related deaths in Great Britain. Around 5,000 people die every year from asbestos-related diseases, which often develop decades after exposure. This confirms the need for caution and approved disposal methods.

Asbestos waste FAQs

  • bin shapes icon What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a natural fibrous mineral once widely used in building materials for insulation, fireproofing and durability. It is now known to cause serious lung diseases if airborne fibres are inhaled, so it is classified as hazardous waste.

It was fully banned in the UK in 1999, but it can still be present in many older commercial and public buildings.

  • bin shapes icon How is asbestos waste disposed of?

Asbestos waste is sealed, labelled, transported by a registered carrier, and taken to an authorised hazardous waste facility. It must not go in general waste, recycling bins, or standard construction skips. A hazardous waste consignment note is required when asbestos waste is moved.

  • bin shapes icon What is an asbestos report, and when is it required for commercial property?

An asbestos report records whether asbestos-containing materials are present, where they are, what condition they are in, and what action is needed. A management survey helps dutyholders manage asbestos during normal occupation. A refurbishment or demolition survey is usually needed before intrusive works that could disturb hidden asbestos.

  • bin shapes icon What types of asbestos waste are common in buildings?

Common waste includes floor and ceiling tiles, insulation boards, lagging, roofing sheets, old wiring coating, fireproof panels, and other materials containing asbestos fibres.

  • bin shapes icon How do you dispose of asbestos sheets?

Asbestos sheets should not be broken, cut, mixed with other waste, or placed in a standard skip. They need to be wrapped, sealed, labelled, and collected through a licensed asbestos waste disposal service.

Business Waste Ltd can arrange asbestos sheet collection and disposal from business premises, construction sites, and commercial properties across the UK.

  • bin shapes icon How much does asbestos disposal cost?

Asbestos disposal costs depend on the type of asbestos, the amount of waste, how it’s stored, site access, and whether removal is also required.

Send us the details of your asbestos waste and Business Waste Ltd can provide a free quote for collection, removal, and disposal.
