What waste types can you put in wheelie bins?
A wide range of solid waste types can be put in wheelie bins. They can be used as a recycling wheelie bin or for non-recyclable rubbish, such as general waste. Most daily rubbish produced by businesses can be separated and placed in wheelie bins as part of an effective recycling and waste management plan.
Standard wheelie bins should not be used for liquids, oils, chemicals, hazardous waste or other specialist materials unless a specific service has been agreed.

Recycling wheelie bins
You can use wheelie bins to recycle:
- Dry recyclables: plastic, metal and glass can be collected together where this matches your collection service. In England, paper and card normally need to be collected separately from these materials unless your collector has completed the required co-collection assessment.
- Paper: use all sizes of wheelie bins to separate paper for recycling.
- Cardboard: separate cardboard for recycling in any size of a wheelie bin.
- Plastic: waste plastic can be stored in all wheelie bin sizes for recycling.
- Glass: within our standard service, glass collections use smaller dedicated bins such as 120L or 240L options.
You can also use wheelie bins to store non-recyclable rubbish:
- General waste: non-recyclable materials that do not belong in one of your separate recycling or food-waste collections.
- Food waste: within our standard service, food waste uses smaller dedicated wheelie bins such as 120L or 240L options, subject to local availability.
- Garden waste: grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, windfall fruit, and other garden waste.
Wheelie bin colours
Wheelie-bin colours and lid options vary by supplier and service. Different colours or labels can help distinguish waste streams, but always follow the labels and collection instructions provided for your site.

Who needs wheelie bins?
Wheelie bins suit many workplaces producing regular general waste, food waste or recyclable materials. Common organisations that use wheelie bins include:
- Offices – separate wheelie bins for paper, cardboard, and general waste
- Shops – wheelie bins for general waste and recycling
- Restaurants – individual food waste and glass recycling wheelie bins
- Hospitals – wheelie bins for patients and visitors’ general waste and recycling
- Schools – food waste, general waste, and dry mixed recycling wheelie bins
Arrange delivery and collection of wheelie bins
Tell us which waste streams you need to collect, your postcode, preferred bin sizes if known and how often the containers are likely to fill. We’ll confirm suitable wheelie bins and provide a quote for delivery and collection.
Collection frequencies can be set separately for different waste streams and adjusted where your requirements change.

Wheelie bin FAQs
-
What size are council wheelie bins?
Most council wheelie bins provided to households in the UK are 240-litre wheelie bins. These are often used for domestic general waste, recycling, and garden waste. The sizes, colours, and uses of council wheelie bins vary for different areas of the UK, so check with your local authority for specific details about your council wheelie bins.
-
When were wheelie bins introduced in the UK?
The plastic wheelie bin was invented in March 1968 in the UK by Frank Rotherham Mouldings. This was invented to move waste from one side of the factory to the other. The use of wheelie bins for homes in the UK didn’t become more common until the 1980s.
It wasn’t until 2003 when the Household Waste Recycling Act was passed in the UK that required local authorities to provide households with separate bins for recycling collections. Around 30 million tonnes of UK waste come from household wheelie bins.
-
How big are wheelie bins?
Wheelie bins vary in size, but the standard 240 litre wheelie bin is 107cm in height x 58cm in width x 74cm in depth. The largest wheelie bins are 1100 litre wheelie bins, which are 133cm in height X 138cm in width X 109cm in depth.
-
How much are wheelie bins?
Wheelie bins range in price depending on their size, material, and where you buy a wheelie bin. It’s more cost-effective to use wheelie bin services that provide the bins for free, rather than buying your own bins. Many councils and local authorities charge to replace a domestic wheelie bin if it’s lost, damaged, or stolen.
-
What are wheelie bins made from?
Most modern wheelie bins are made from polyethylene – a popular type of plastic. Plastic wheelie bins are durable, waterproof, and lightweight. Polyethylene is often used as it can withstand acids, fungi, and bacteria. It’s also more resistant to cracks, dents, and bending than some other plastic types.
