Commercial Composting

The most sustainable way to dispose of organic waste from a business is via commercial composting. This is the process that breaks down organic matter to create compost that’s used as a fertiliser and soil conditioner to help plants and crops grow. It’s the ideal disposal method for commercial food and garden waste.

Composting keeps organic waste away from landfill and promotes a circular economy. The waste materials are naturally recycled to create a useful product – compost. Lots of food waste and green waste removed from businesses by licensed waste carriers or homes by local authorities may go to commercial composting sites.

Understanding how commercial composting works and its importance can help your organisation get rid of organic waste sustainably. At Business Waste, we keep all waste away from landfill, and commercial composting is one option we use for organic waste. Learn all about commercial composting and how it works.

What is industrial composting?

Industrial composting (also known as commercial composting) is the processing of organic waste on a large scale to turn it into compost. It’s a similar system to composting food scraps in a compost bin at home, but on a much bigger scale. Various techniques are applied to speed up and control the process.

Commercial compost sites accept a wider range of biodegradable waste than you can compost at home. The conditions are closely controlled for effective processing. Industrial composters monitor pH, carbon and nitrogen ratios, temperature, moisture levels, and other factors to maintain efficiency and quality.

The main benefit of industrial composting is that it keeps organic materials away from landfill, where they decompose and release the greenhouse gas methane into the environment. Composting still produces methane, but much less compared to organic waste rotting in landfill, which is why it’s a more sustainable disposal method for commercial organic materials.

How does commercial composting work?

Commercial composting follows the same biological processes as composting at home to break down organic materials. The main differences are that it’s done on a much bigger scale, there’s more use of machinery and technology, the process is faster, and higher temperatures are often reached.

Industrial composting facilities use a few different methods depending on the volume of waste they manage, the available space, and the technology and machinery. It can take between six weeks and six months to produce nutrient-rich compost, depending on the process. Once your organic waste reaches an industrial composting facility, it may go through one of four processes.

These are the main methods of commercial composting:

  • Windrow composting – this is the most common type of industrial composting. Windrows are long and high piles of organic waste that are often between four and eight feet high, up to 15 feet wide. Organic waste is added and the piles turned regularly (usually by machines) to let in air, heat, and moisture so the microbes decompose the materials quickly. It takes around four months for waste to compost in windrows.
  • In-vessel composting (IVC) – organic materials are shredded and placed in a commercial composting machine, which controls the temperature, oxygen, and water. The in-vessel composter rotates and applies high temperatures to kill harmful bacteria and pathogens while ensuring everything decomposes at the same time. It can take just one month to create compost, but there’s a limit to the volume of organic waste that can be composted at one time.
  • Static pile composting – a similar process to windrow composting, except loose and dry compostable materials like wood chips and shredded paper are mixed in with it. This enables airflow through the pile, so there’s no need for regular turning. The piles are occasionally turned or mixed by machinery, and it can take just three months to generate compost.
  • Vermicomposting – some homes may use vermicomposting, but it’s one of the least used techniques on an industrial scale as it’s harder to manage and less efficient than other methods. Using vermiculture in commercial composting involves worms breaking down organic materials into nutrient-rich soil. It can take two months on a small scale.

Types of compostable waste

Any kind of organic waste that you can compost at home is commercially compostable. This includes food scraps such as fruit and vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, garden waste like leaves and grass cuttings, and shredded paper. Industrial composting facilities can accept and process a greater range of biodegradable waste types.

Types of industrially compostable waste include:

  • Food waste – waste food items that take longer to compost at home can be industrially composted such as fish and chicken bones, meat, raw mussel shells, avocado and mango pits.
  • Garden waste – green waste including grass cuttings, dead flowers, leaves, small branches and twigs is all commercially compostable.
  • Animal waste – manure from horses, cows, goats, and poultry can be industrially composted. This includes bedding material such as poultry litter, straw, sawdust, hay, and wood shavings.
  • Biodegradable packaging – packaging materials that have a compostable logo or sign can usually be sent for industrial composting (but aren’t usually compostable at home). The higher temperatures and industrial processes mean they break down compared to domestic composting.
  • Bioplastics – certified compostable plastics have polymer chains that degrade and break down during industrial composting processes. Microbes consume the residue after polymer chains break down as energy, releasing carbon dioxide, water, and biomass.

Home vs industrial composting

You might have a compost bin or pile in your garden at home. The basic underlying process to compost waste at home is similar to commercial composting, but there are some significant differences:

  • Size – industrial composting is done on a huge scale with large windrows and tonnes of organic waste processed while most domestic composting only handles a few litres of waste.
  • Speed – composting at home can take many months or even years to break down, while some industrial processes take as little as a month.
  • Temperature – much higher temperatures are reached at industrial composting facilities, which speeds up the decomposition process.
  • Control – there’s greater control over the temperature, oxygen levels, and other factors at industrial composting facilities. This speeds up the process and ensures a better quality of compost usually.
  • Compostable waste – more types of biodegradable waste can be composted at industrial facilities. The likes of bones, mango pits, and shells can take longer to break down in garden compost piles, while the temperature doesn’t reach the required heat for some bioplastics and compostable packaging to break down.

Arrange commercial composting
with Business Waste

At Business Waste, we dispose of all waste away from landfill. Commercial composting is a common option we use for food waste, commercial garden waste, and other organic materials. We partner with various suppliers that use industrial composting facilities as a sustainable disposal method.

All waste is removed by licensed waste carriers, and you receive a free duty of care certificate that confirms the safe and legal collection and disposal of your waste. This provides proof and peace of mind that your waste is disposed of at an industrial composting facility, where relevant.
