Clinical Waste Bags

Business Waste supplies clinical waste bin bags and arranges collections for healthcare providers, veterinary practices, dentists, beauty businesses and other organisations producing healthcare waste.

Tell us what waste your organisation produces, approximately how much there is and whether it is infectious, medicinally contaminated or non-infectious. We’ll confirm the appropriate bags or specialist containers, arrange delivery and set up a one-off or scheduled collection.

Standard clinical waste bags are supplied without separate rental or delivery charges as part of the agreed collection service.

How does clinical waste bag collection work?

  1. Tell us about your clinical waste

Provide the waste types, average amounts, business location and how often they arise.

  2. We confirm the correct bags or containers

We’ll identify the appropriate colour-coded bags and any rigid containers needed for waste that cannot safely go into sacks.

  3. Fill and close each bag correctly

Keep waste streams separate, stay within the permitted fill level, and securely close each bag before collection.

  4. We arrange collection

A registered waste carrier collects the sealed bags and transfers each waste stream through the appropriate authorised treatment or disposal route.

Types of clinical waste bin bags

Different clinical waste bags are used for different soft healthcare waste streams. The correct colour depends on whether the waste is infectious, chemically or medicinally contaminated, or non-infectious offensive waste.

Some clinical waste, including sharps and certain anatomical or dental waste, requires rigid containers instead of bags.

What colour clinical waste bags do I need?

Colour coding helps identify different healthcare waste streams, but not every colour is a soft waste bag. Some streams require rigid containers. Packaging requirements can also differ across the UK, so we’ll confirm the correct option for your site. These are the different colours of clinical waste bags used in the UK and what each one can store:

  • Yellow clinical waste bags: infectious waste contaminated with medicines or chemicals that requires the appropriate incineration route.
  • Orange clinical waste bags: infectious clinical waste without chemical or pharmaceutical contamination. Depending on the waste and facility, alternative treatment or incineration may be used.
  • Red-coded anatomical containers: for suitable anatomical healthcare waste. These are specialist rigid containers rather than standard clinical waste bags.
  • Purple clinical waste bags: suitable for cytotoxic or cytostatic contaminated waste. Sharps contaminated with these medicines require a rigid purple-lidded sharps container rather than a bag.
  • Dental waste containers: different dental materials require different specialist containers. See our dental waste page for amalgam and other dental streams.
  • Yellow and black (tiger) clinical waste bags: non-infectious offensive waste. Treatment or disposal depends on the authorised collection route.
  • Clear clinical waste bags – for lateral flow waste, such as used lateral flow tests and devices. This waste classes as a type of chemical waste, so is incinerated.

Clinical waste bag sizes

Clinical waste bags are available in different capacities depending on the waste stream, storage setup and collection frequency. The exact dimensions vary by product, so confirm the supplied size before ordering.

Choose a size that can be closed securely before it becomes overfilled. Clinical bags should generally be closed at around two-thirds full rather than packed to their maximum physical capacity.

Exact sizes can vary depending on the type of clinical waste bag, but a few examples of clinical waste bag sizes include:

  • 20-litre clinical waste bags – 11”x17”x26” (28cmx43cmx66cm)
  • 30-litre clinical waste bags – 11”x22”x25” (28cmx56cmx64cm)
  • 70-litre clinical waste bags – 14”x28”x34” (36cmx71cmx86cm)
  • 90-litre clinical waste bags – 15”x28”x39” (38cmx71cmx99cm)

Note: not every clinical waste bag colour is available in every capacity. Speak to our in-house team to find out what is available in your location.

Supporting clinical waste collection for a mobile healthcare business

Shaw Scope delivers mobile earwax removal and foot care treatments, generating small volumes of clinical waste during routine appointments. Although waste volumes are low, compliant handling remains essential.

The business produces clinical waste, including treatment materials, alongside occasional sharps waste. With limited storage requirements and infrequent waste generation, a standard collection schedule would not be practical.

We introduced a flexible, low-volume setup that includes clinical waste bag collections and sharps disposal support when needed. This ensures that waste is correctly segregated and removed through approved treatment routes without unnecessary collections.

The setup gives Shaw Scope separate clinical waste bag and sharps collections without requiring an unnecessary fixed collection frequency.

Arrange clinical waste bag delivery and collection

Tell us which clinical waste streams your organisation produces, the bag types or containers you need and how often they require collecting. We’ll confirm the appropriate setup and arrange delivery and collection across the UK.

One-off and scheduled collections are available, and separate sharps or other healthcare waste services can be managed through the same Business Waste account where required.
