Waste Management in Reading

Reading is a thriving commercial hub with a particular attraction for insurance and information technology businesses. Despite its closeness to London, many people commute into the town to work, rather than out of it. It has been ranked as Britain’s best performing area in terms of wellbeing and economic success, looking at factors such as skills, income, health and employment, and, with its population of around 233,000, it is the biggest settlement in Britain that doesn’t have city status.

There are obviously vast numbers of businesses catering for the needs of the local population and a far wider customer base, and many companies must also deal with the influx of visitors for special events such as home games for the London Irish rugby union team or Reading Football Club, and the town’s Half Marathon.

Bigger still is the Reading Festival, which is one of the country’s most popular music festivals. The festival is held every year on Richfield Avenue’s Little John’s farm in the central Reading area, close to the Caversham Bridge. It is the oldest continuing pop music festival in the world and has hosted vast numbers of world-class stars since it started out as the National Jazz Festival in 1961.

Anyone who has ever been to a music festival knows how much rubbish can be created in a short amount of time and this gives an idea of the scale of waste management issues faced, not just by event managers, but by the wider business community.
