Waste Management Barnet

In 2012/13 the London Borough of Barnet ranked 288th out of 352 councils assessed on their recycling rates. With EU targets of 50% waste recycled by 2020, Barnet only managed a disappointing 33.03% despite improved recycling schemes in many areas. The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) which serves seven boroughs including Barnet, help dispose of 850,000 tonnes of waste generated in North London every year.

Over 211,000 tonnes of waste in North London goes to landfill – this is not only bad for the environment, it is becoming increasingly expensive for both the council and local businesses
Landfill tax is now approximately 13 times the amount it cost in 1996; research suggests UK businesses could save up to £6.4 billion per year by improving the way they use resources and manage their waste
