Ozempic and Wegovy Sharps Containers
Pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, care providers and other organisations can generate used needles and other sharps from injectable medicines including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, insulin and similar treatments.
Business Waste provides sharps bin disposal and collection for businesses across the UK. We can supply the appropriate sharps containers and arrange one-off or scheduled collections through registered waste carriers.
Tell us which injectable medicines are used or handled at your site, how many sharps bins you produce, and whether the waste includes needles, unused medicines, or complete injection devices. We’ll confirm the correct waste stream and container with no hidden fees.
Your dedicated account manager can assist with sharps collection queries, waste documentation and changes to your container sizes or collection schedule.

Do Ozempic and Wegovy pens go in a sharps bin?
The removable needle does. But the empty pen does not automatically belong in the same sharps container.
Current Ozempic and Wegovy instructions tell users to remove the needle immediately after each injection and dispose of the needle safely. The empty pen should then be disposed of without the needle, according to your local waste collection route.
For businesses, unused or expired pens that still contain medicine may need a pharmaceutical waste route rather than simply being placed in a sharps bin. Tell us whether the device is empty, contains medicine or still has a needle attached, and we’ll confirm the appropriate collection stream.
Medication injection pens such as those produced by brands including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Saxenda, and Novo Nordisk require responsible disposal after use. These are a type of medical waste and must be disposed of in sharps containers after use or expiration.
They must not be thrown away with general waste as they could end up in landfill and pose health and environmental hazards. Each pen contains a needle, plastic casing, and metal components. Improper disposal could lead to a spread of disease and infection while the plastic and metal parts take hundreds of years to decompose in landfill.
Any needles from the medication pens are normally incinerated to destroy the risks of infection. Sometimes the entire pen might be incinerated for safety too, but there are some takeback schemes in place for recycling. Currently, Novo Nordisk offers a recycling takeback service where empty pens (with the needle removed) are returned and the plastic and metal parts recycled.
Pharmacies and healthcare facilities can provide boxes for patients and individuals to return relevant empty medication pens. This can help improve recycling rates as millions are used each year in the UK. The needles must always be stored and disposed of in appropriate sharps containers though.

What colour sharps bin should you use for Ozempic needles?
In England, used detachable needles from Ozempic, Wegovy and similar injectable medicines should usually enter the medicinally contaminated sharps stream, identified by a yellow-lidded sharps container. These are commonly used for syringes, and are the safest option as used Ozempic needles may still contain remnants of the medication.
Orange-lidded containers are used for sharps without medicinal contamination, while purple-lidded containers are reserved for sharps contaminated with cytotoxic or cytostatic medicines. Ozempic and other diabetes and weight loss medications are not a cytotoxic drug – they are classified as GLP-1 agonists and contain the active drug semaglutide, so they should not go in any purple-lidded sharps bins.
Colour-coding arrangements can vary across the UK, so businesses should use the confirmed container for their collection.

Who needs sharps containers for Ozempic and Wegovy pens?
Medical organisations that prescribe, supply, or sell any medical injection pens such as Ozempic and Wegovy can benefit from using sharps containers. There’s currently no legal obligation to take them back, but having sharps bins in place ensures you can dispose of them in the correct manner.
Some of the main businesses that benefit from sharps bins for medical injection pens include:
- Pharmacies: needles or medicine waste from services delivered on site, damaged/expired stock and any take-back schemes they choose to operate
- GP surgeries and clinics: sharps generated during injectable treatments
- Hospitals: medicinally contaminated sharps from patient treatment
- Care homes: injectable medicines administered by staff
- Private weight-management clinics: needles and medication waste generated through treatment services
- Diabetes clinics: needles and related injection sharps
- Home healthcare providers: where staff generate sharps while delivering treatment
Sharps created while your own staff administer treatment are your organisation’s healthcare waste and need to enter your clinical waste system.
