Building Waste Disposal
Construction, demolition, renovation, and excavation work creates building waste that requires responsible and sustainable disposal. This can include bricks, rubble, pipes, broken tools, and other materials. Proper storage, removal, and building waste disposal are essential to keep sites clean and clear while protecting the environment and upholding legal obligations.
Currently in the UK, almost a third of waste sent to landfill is from the construction and building sector. Disposing of building waste should be done more sustainably with the separating of materials, removal by licensed waste carriers, and alternative disposal methods such as recycling and recovery. We aim to keep all building waste away from landfill.

Building waste collection
Arrange building waste collection on a daily, weekly, or fortnightly schedule to suit your needs. Combine the number and sizes of bins, bags, and skips with a removal frequency that’s cost-effective and efficient. This avoids paying for half-empty container collections or bins and skips from overflowing and rubble piling up.
Regular building material waste collection helps keep your construction site or working environment at a private residence or commercial property clean and clear. Health and safety are key concerns and frequent building waste removal reduces the risk of trips, slips, and other hazards that building debris may pose.
Building waste is a type of commercial waste when it comes from a construction site or work done by hired builders on a private or commercial property (such as renovation or extension work). This means you must organise building waste removal by licensed waste carriers to operate safely and legally.
At Business Waste, we only work with licensed waste carriers to ensure your building waste is removed and transported safely and legally. You can organise building waste collection at a convenient time and date to minimise disruption to your operations too for smooth and affordable management.

Builders waste disposal
Responsible waste disposal is important whether you run a small builder’s business or a large building firm. Work on big construction and demolition sites generates all sorts of waste that must be stored, removed, and disposed of properly. The same is true for builder’s waste on a smaller scale, such as an office renovation or home extension.
Building material waste disposal depends on the specific material type. We keep all waste away from landfill where possible, which means recycling, recovery, and reusing are the main disposal methods. The likes of bricks, concrete, and rubble are often turned into aggregate while any wood, metal, and glass are recycled.
After collection, your building waste is transported by licensed waste carriers to a nearby waste management facility for legal and responsible disposal. It’s sorted and reviewed then sent to an appropriate facility for recycling, recovery, incineration, or another disposal method.
You receive a free duty of care certificate that includes details such as the date, where the builder’s waste was produced, who removed it, and where it was disposed of and how. This provides proof and peace of mind that your builder’s waste is disposed of safely and legally.
Recycling building materials
Many types of building debris are recyclable. Recycling building materials is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to get rid of them. This saves energy and resources to source raw materials and contributes to a circular economy. It also prevents building waste from going to landfill, which reduces how much landfill tax you pay for disposal.
Using different bins, skip bags, and containers to segregate waste materials at the source on your building site helps reduce contamination risks and increase recycling. These are some common types of building material waste that can be recycled:
- Inert waste – bricks, concrete, and rubble are often recycled to create aggregate for new concrete and asphalt materials.
- Scrap metal – pipes, cables, and girders can be recycled into new metal products.
- Glass recycling – old windows and broken glass are crushed and recycled into new glass.
- Wood waste – beams, timber, and other wood is often shredded and turned into chipboard, pellets, fuel, and other materials.
- Plastic recycling – packaging, pipes, and other plastic items can be recycled.

Can I take building waste to the tip?
You cannot take building waste to the tip or a household waste recycling centre (HWRC) if you’re a business, builder, or contractor. This type of building waste is commercial waste and must be removed by licensed waste carriers. Most council HWRCs don’t accept such trade waste.
However, you can often take building materials from your home or domestic property to the tip. Bricks, rubble, plasterboard, and wood are accepted at some HWRCs. Check beforehand at your local HWRC though as charges may apply based on the type of waste building materials.
