The history of Business Waste

Business Waste started on the 15th of July 2015 with just three members of staff, who all proudly remain with the organisation today. The business was the brainchild of David Adams and Mark Hall, who saw a gap in the market for a waste brokerage firm to transform the industry’s image.

They wanted to move away from the image of people in hi-vis jackets working out of portacabins with little web presence to a slick online service that matches businesses with the best solution for their waste needs. The duo aimed to create a business that had a positive environmental impact too.

In 2015, the business began in a tiny office with no windows. Since then the headcount has grown to more than 100 employees working across sales, logistics, customer service, accounts, and marketing. Business Waste outgrew its first office and is now based in a 15,000 square foot office in York.

Business Waste has seen significant growth since its inception. Clientele has increased to 36,150 customers and the business has helped manage more than 400 waste types, from clothing samples to e-cigarette liquid. The company recorded revenue of £180,000 in 2015, but by the end of 2025 it’s expected to reach £23 million, an increase of 12,678%.

Our recognitions and awards

In 2020, Business Waste appeared at number 59 in the Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Fast Track 100. Business Waste was placed 27th in the 2021 Ward Hadaway Yorkshire Fastest 50 Awards.

Over the years the business has donated over £180,000 to charities, including significant contributions to Kevin Sinfield’s Epic 7 in 7 in 7 Challenge for MND. Business Waste regularly supports the annual York Against Cancer charity golf day and York’s The Island, which provides space and time for vulnerable children and young people.

Business Waste also has key partnerships with York RLFC and Ilkley Rugby Club.
