Easter Waste

What do chocolate eggs, hot cross buns, and roast lamb have in common? They all increase in sales over the Easter period, such is their association with the festival. However, they also create more waste. For example, it’s estimated that eight million hot cross buns are binned every year – mostly over the holidays.

The date for Easter may change each year, but one thing that remains the same is the extra waste it produces. Easter waste includes everything from crème eggs’ foil packaging to slices of meat discarded from an Easter Sunday roast.

We’ve created guides to help you have a zero waste Easter with tips and ideas for recycling any rubbish you generate when celebrating this spring. Discover our guides and blog posts that cover everything from facts and stats about the holidays to ways to improve your Easter recycling at home or in your business.

How much waste is
produced at Easter?

Easter creates more than 9,600 tonnes of cardboard waste every year in the UK. Around 8,000 tonnes of this are from Easter egg boxes – that’s the same weight as about 10,000 cows. The good news is that recycling Easter egg packaging is possible for most types made from cardboard.

It’s not just chocolate eggs that cause a spike in waste over the Easter holiday. Sending and receiving Easter cards might not be as big as at Christmas, but millions are still sent every year. The envelopes and cards become waste but recycling them is possible with other paper waste.

Celebrating also involves big family meals and traditional treats like hot cross buns, which can create additional food waste. Some people even throw out Easter eggs with millions left uneaten every year!
