Battery Bins

A battery bin helps improve recycling rates of used batteries and is a legal requirement for many businesses that sell or supply them. Lots of shops need bins for batteries where customers can return dead ones. Manufacturers, garages, offices, and schools can all use them to segregate and recycle batteries of various types and sizes.

Battery bins are important to keep used batteries separate from other waste materials to recover the valuable materials they contain. It prevents batteries from ending up in general waste bins and landfill sites. This reduces the risk of fires in waste trucks and landfill sites that can cause serious harm.

Battery recycling service

Who needs a battery recycling bin?

Any business in the UK that sells or supplies 32kg or more of batteries every year must legally offer a free collection of waste and used batteries (a takeback scheme). This means having a battery recycling bin in your business to collect any type of portable used batteries from customers and consumers, even the kinds you don’t sell.

There should be a sign or poster in place advertising the fact that your business collects used batteries. You must also join a battery compliance scheme (BCS) and register with the relevant environmental regulator. This depends on the location of your business and the types of batteries it supplies and takes back.

Any retailers or distributors that sell less than 32kg of batteries annually don’t legally need to have a battery recycling bin. However, you can still voluntarily put a battery recycling bin in place and arrange collections by licensed waste carriers. This is sustainable and helps boost your eco reputation with customers.

Check the UK government website for more information and updates about producer responsibility for waste batteries.

Battery recycling bins

Store used batteries separately from other waste in a battery recycling bin, box, or container to avoid cross-contamination. If you collect or generate different battery types, then use more than one battery recycling bin to store them separately from each other – as they’re not recycled the same way.

Various sizes of battery recycling bins are available. These range from small battery boxes suitable for domestic AA and AAA batteries to big sturdy containers that can hold heavy-duty car batteries. Large battery drums suitable for shop floors, long tubes that save space, and small battery bins for offices can all be sourced.

We can provide your company with clearly labelled battery disposal boxes and containers to make collection clear and easy. Select suitable sizes and numbers of battery recycling bins and combine them with a collection frequency that meets the volume and types of old batteries your business produces.

What can you put in a battery disposal bin?

A battery disposal bin for retailers is used to store any sealed batteries that are easily carried by individuals. These commonly include AA, AAA, and 9v batteries, as well as rechargeable batteries and those from electronic equipment including:

  • Mobile phone batteries
  • Laptop batteries
  • Vape batteries
  • Watch batteries
  • Hearing aid batteries
  • Electric toothbrush batteries
  • Hand-held vacuum cleaner batteries
  • Torch batteries

Car and motorbike batteries along with batteries from industrial equipment do not have to be taken back by a business. However, if your business creates car battery or industrial battery waste, such as a garage or factory, then you should have a separate battery bin in place to store these.
