EU statistics body released European recycling rate league table

The United Kingdom has come in at 10th place alongside Italy in the municipal waste ranking of European nations; one place lower than the previous year, due to an seemingly fast-acting Slovenia who climbed the ranks after increasing its recycling rate from 36% in 2014 to 54% in 2015.

The figures were released by Eurostat, the statistics body for the European Union, and encompass the recycling rate for municipal waste in 2015 by European nation, including Norway, Montenegro, and Switzerland.

The UK recycled 43.5% of its municipal waste in 2015, a figure matched by Italy, which joined the UK in 10th place, preceded by Denmark, and followed by Norway.

In addition to dropping a spot on the league table, the UK also recycled less waste than in 2014, when 43.7% of municipal waste was recycled. Although, its a decrease of only 0.2%, it is a step in the wrong direction.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Germany retained its impressive league table lead and increased its recycling rate from 65.6% in 2014 to 66.1% in 2015.

In second place is neighbouring Austria, which recorded a recycling rate of 56%; a drop of 0.3% compared with 2014. Rounding off the top three is Slovenia, which must have gone on a recycling frenzy in 2015 to achieve such an impressive jump in the space of one year.
