Tanbridge improves its recycling rates

Posted on:

A poorly performing district council has transformed itself into one of the best recyclers and waste management authorities after it introduced a new recycling collection scheme.

Tanbridge district council in Surrey was lambasted by residents and authorities alike as they believed they failed to deliver an adequate service. Now, however, according to waste contractor Biffa, they are one of the best councils when it comes to recycling.

The service, which looks set to save the authority around £1million per year, commenced at the beginning of last month and so far has been met with huge praise. It sees dry recyclables mixed and collected in

240 litre wheeled bins one week and turned into residual waste the next. There is also a weekly food collection service.

According to Biffa, the new service has meant that the amount of residual waste being sent to landfill has halved and the council’s recycling statistics have risen from over 30 per cent to nearly 50 per cent.

Councillors are said to be ecstatic with the figures and how the scheme has generally been received. They say that they believe the service will ultimately transform the recycling rate for the better and will also bring important cost savings.
