A South Tyneside recycling sticker scheme has landed a South Shields family with a £250 cash reward.
Lorraine Watson, from Hayton Avenue in Marsden, involved all her family, with son Mason, five, and daughter Robyn, six, becoming sticklers for putting the stickers on the correct items.
Local councils had been urging households to recycle more, through the North East Recycling Awards, with the chance to share a prize fund of £10,000.
Under the scheme residents have to register to receive stickers to apply to aerosols, glass jars and food and drink cartons, which they recycle. An item is chosen at random and the winner is identified by the sticker.
Said Lorraine: “I was already recycling quite a lot, but hadn’t realised you could recycle aerosols until I saw the article on this reward scheme. The children love stickers, so I thought it would be a great way to get them involved with recycling, and we are delighted to be able to choose prizes that can be enjoyed by the whole family.”
She added: “Friends and family have certainly taken a keener interest in recycling since finding out that we’ve won a prize.”
Every month one winning item is then selected at random in each local authority area, with that person winning a prize of £250.
Each month until September, one lucky recycler in each of the five local authority areas will win the money.
Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “It’s fantastic to see that people are getting involved in the scheme and that some lucky residents are reaping the rewards.”
