Estate agents fined £1,000 for dumping waste down an alleyway
Officers from the Environment Agency and North Lincolnshire Council have successfully prosecuted a Scunthorpe estate agents after linking them to a pile of fly-tipped waste dumped in the back streets of a residential area.
Smart Move Lettings appeared in North Lincolnshire Magistrates’ Court last week and pleaded guilty to the waste charges brought against it by the Environment Agency.
The Crosby-based company were linked to a pile of fly-tipped waste that had been illegally disposed of in Digby Street, also in Crosby.
The court heard how the estate agents had hired an individual to remove the dumped waste from one of the rented properties in its portfolio but the firm did not check the individual’s credentials.
The hired-hand turned out to be an unlicensed waste carrier and he disposed of the waste just metres away from the property it had been removed from.
The council and the Environment Agency was alerted to the pile of rubbish, including armchairs and mattresses, and were able to connect it to Smart Move Lettings, which was found to have failed in its responsibility to ensure its trade waste was disposed of in accordance with the environmental regulations.
Sadie Kamali, owner of Smart Move Lettings, was fined £1,000 in court and ordered to pay £656 in costs.
A spokesperson for North Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Richard Hannigan, said: “It is an offence to give your waste to an unlicensed waste carrier, whether you are a private householder or commercial business, you must always use a licensed waste carrier to get rid of your unwanted rubbish.”
