A recycling plant owner has appeared in Cardiff Crown Court after breaching environmental regulations

The owner of a recycling plant in Pontypool, Wales, has been handed a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to breaching the terms of his environmental permits.

Thorncroft Recycling Waste Ltd, which was operated from the Polo Grounds Industrial Estate, situated in New Inn, was found to be in breach of a number of environmental regulations and was operating without a permit, after the owner’s previous company Thorncroft Steel went into administration and permits were not obtained for the new Thorncroft Recycling Waste company.

Alex Greenwood, prosecuting, told Cardiff Crown Court how the defendant had allowed his firm to operate the business without the necessary permits and had failed to meet environmental regulations.

The court heard how Thorncroft Recycling Waste had received a number of valuable contracts, including Caerphilly County Borough Council, from which the unreliable firm made more than £190,000 in one year.

On January 15, 2014, when Natural Resources Wales visited the recycling plant in order to carry out an inspection, they found the firm was breaking storage regulations and that the site’s drainage was not fit for purpose.

Despite receiving multiple warning letters from Natural Resources Wales (NRW), the owner of Thorncroft Recycling Waste failed to comply with the demands made by NRW and the recycling plant continued to be managed in breach of the environmental regulations.

Pontypool Park Estate, the owner of the land on which Thorncroft Recycling Waste was operated, had to remove 5,000 tonnes of waste from the site when Natural Resources Wales shut the company down. The defendant was given a suspended 12 month prison sentence and banned from managing a business for five years.
