Investigation is underway following a commercial fly-tipping incident along a popular country path

Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council have joined forces to find the perpetrators of a recent ‘industrial scale’ fly-tipping incident in a scenic country lane.

The popular footpath between Biddulph and Brindley Ford, in Staffordshire, has been left unrecognisable after unknown individuals dumped around 50 compacted blocks of recyclable waste on the night of Friday, January 27, according to one local man, who found the waste on Saturday morning.

The blocks of plastic and cardboard waste measure 10ft high each. At some points along the footpath, there is barely enough space left for joggers, cyclists and dog-walkers to manoeuvre around the piles.

Investigating officers from Staffordshire Police and council wardens are treating the waste as a commercial fly-tipping incident and have already begun the investigation to catch those responsible for such a thoughtless and selfish offence.

The sheer mass of waste and the way in which it has been compressed into blocks, suggest the perpetrators are operating a recycling business, whether with or without the necessary environmental and waste transfer permits remains to be seen.

A spokesperson from Staffordshire Police said: “A large quantity of commercial waste had been dumped on the cycle path. Officers attended with colleagues from Staffordshire Moorlands District Council and taped off the obstruction for safety reasons.”

In addition to the blocks of recyclable waste, the culprits dumped a huge pile of shredded paper further along the footpath, creating a complete barricade for locals using the country route.

Local residents, David Rowe, 66, told Stoke Sentinel: “When I tried to climb over the shredded paper my feet disappeared into the mound, it was almost like quicksand because it was wet.”
