New retail recycling and resource report released

‘A Better Retailing Climate’ report has been published by The British Retail Consortium

The British Retail Consortium has released a report outlining the developments that have been made by British retailers to improve the sector’s environmental performance in 2015.

The report, titled ‘A Better Retailing Climate’ was published on 1 March and produced by The British Retail Consortium, whose members include supermarket bigwigs Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda, and Tesco. The report claims that the following advancements have been made within the retail industry:

The report also discusses the impact that the falling oil prices has had upon the plastic recycling industry and how this has affected retailing. With the consistently low oil prices, retailers have found it more economically suitable to source new plastic materials rather than recycled plastics.

This resulted in the closure of recycling centre across the UK, including Closed Loop Recycling, situated in Dagenham, which shutdown operations last year due to the lack of demand for recycled milk bottles usually purchased by retailers and manufacturers.

Some have accused retailers and manufacturers of reneging on certain producer pledges in favour of cheaper materials. However, with the publication of the report, retailers have warned recycling firms, such as Closed Loop Recycling, that their “business models behind reprocessing need to be sustainable in the long term”
