Avoid using the ‘white van man’ to get rid of your rubbish!
Householders have been asked by a Derbyshire council, to avoid using the ‘white van man’, who place adverts in shop windows, newspapers and on social media websites, after the number of fly-tipping incidents rise.
Amber Valley Borough Council have received nearly five hundred fly-tipping complaints over the last twelve months, a significant rise compared to the previous year’s figure of 354.
All reports of fly-tipping that are received by the council are followed up by officers and over the last year, ninety cases, in which evidence was linked to a possible fly-tipper, were investigated.
As a result, thirty-eight suspected offenders were interviewed under caution, of which seventeen cases were then passed over to the council’s legal team, to decide what action should be taken.
Ten prosecutions proved to be successful and the council managed to recover costs amounting to £5,247, plus the offenders were handed out fines.
Three formal cautions were also given and seven offenders preferred to accept a fixed penalty notice, rather than face prosecution for a smaller offence.
A number of incidents that officers investigated, were linked to householders getting in touch with businesses that had placed an advert on social media websites – the so called ‘white van man’, who claims that they can take away your household rubbish for a bargain price.
However, many of these type of adverts are placed by unregistered, illegal waste carriers, who instead of taking your rubbish to the correct site, dump it down country lanes and in laybys.
