County Durham big on recycling

Recycling is proving to be a big draw in County Durham.

A highly successful campaign entitled ‘The North East Recycling Rewards Scheme’, which provides residents with the opportunity of winning cash in a monthly prize draw, has just been extended thanks to further funding from DEFRA.

The scheme encourages people to recycle such household waste as food and drink cartons and glass jars and has proved so popular since its inception in 2011 that by the end of that year more than 5,000 people were taking part in it. It is confidently expected that the figure will be far higher this year as more homes and schools in the area have been taking part in the scheme, which  is run by Waste Aware North East in conjunction with Valpak limited, SIG Combibloc and five north east councils including Durham County Council.

In order to take part, residents must first register, and they are then sent stickers to place on their recyclable items. A sticker is selected at random from the items at the recycling plant and the lucky winner receives a very welcome £250 cash prize.
