Buckinghamshire councils publish list of the top 10 excuses fly-tippers think will get them out of trouble

The local authorities which form part of the Joint Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire have released a list of the top 10 justifications used by caught out fly-tippers who desperately want to avoid a fine and prosecution.

Buckinghamshire County Council, South Buckinghamshire District Council, Wycombe District Council, Chiltern District Council, and Aylesbury Vale District Council all form part of the joint waste partnership in the county of Buckinghamshire.

The councils are cracking down on fly-tippers who abuse the district and create health and safety hazards and eyesores. In an effort to dissuade those who think they can illegally dump rubbish and then get away with it by using a half-baked excuse, the councils have published a list of the top 10 excuses used by fly-tippers.

Mike Smith, Chairman of the Joint Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire, commented: “The excuses range from the banal to bonkers and the bottom line is – there is no excuse for fly-tipping.”

Here is the list of the top 10 most commonly used justifications used by busted fly-tippers in Buckinghamshire (as published by the Joint Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire):

  1. I know the person who works on the tip and they don’t like me, so when I saw them working, I drove on…
  2. I sold my vehicle to some people who were quite intimidating actually…
  3. It was my van, but I had lent it to this other man who is now not answering my calls… I think his name is Jim…
  4. I saw other fly-tipped waste and thought the area was a recycling centre …
  5. The waste fell off the back of my vehicle as I drove along …
  6. I didn’t dump it – I was there, but I only stopped to do a wee…
  7. My van was untidy and I needed to give my boss a lift so I cleared the rubbish out because I know he doesn’t like the van untidy…
  8. I dropped my phone and there was so much rubbish in the car that I could hardly find it – I cleared the rubbish out so I could find the phone…
  9. I met a man at the ‘dump’ who said he wanted it – can’t think why he then dumped it rather than taking it back to the ‘dump…’
  10. I paid a man with a van to take it…

Since the Buckinghamshire waste partnership began its Illegal Dumping Costs fly-tipping campaign in 2003, the local authorities have successfully prosecuted over 500 individuals and businesses for dumping waste illegally. The councils estimate that these prosecutions have recouped costs of up to £2million.

Warren Whyte, of Buckinghamshire County Council, said of the list: “While initially appearing humorous, this is actually no laughing matter because fly-tipping has blighted our beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside over many years.”
