Commercial waste service to be updated by Barnet council
At a meeting in March 2016, plans were approved by Barnet council for a new ‘stand alone’ waste collection service to run alongside the already existing household waste collection.
The service was created to enable the collection of waste from business customers to run more effectively and efficiently.
Over 2,500 small and medium-sized independent businesses throughout the north London borough already use Barnet’s commercial waste collection service, which is reported to have generated almost £2.34 million for Barnet council from 2014-2015.
Barnet council wants businesses in the borough to aim for a waste recycling target of 25% by 2018, which will hopefully rise to 50% by 2020.
Changes have been made to the policy to help increase the revenue brought in by the waste collection service, which will hopefully see an increase of up to £200,000 in 2017-18, an additional £300,000 in 2018-19 and the same again for the year after.
“Time-banned’ collections will also be put in place for commercial waste customers throughout the borough, to bring them in-line with the borough’s of Brent, Camden and Westminster.
Businesses who don’t already have a proper waste collection contract will be targeted under the council’s new policies, plus a new pay-as-you-go service, daily or evening collection services and a new smart phone app are also being considered, to help improve and enhance the commercial waste collection service within the borough.
